An Open Letter to the US Senate

On Monday, when you go to work, you will vote on changes to current gun regulations. In spite of the deaths of 49 people at the hands of a madman in Orlando, you will likely vote down party lines which is to say, you won’t accomplish much at all.

And someone else’s child will die.

And you’ll offer thoughts and prayers and platitudes while doing nothing.

But what if you did something else? What if instead of bickering and fighting and waving the 2nd Amendment around as if it entitles every man, woman, and child in this country to be issued an AR-15 at birth, you looked at the intent and purpose of it and every other article in the constitution. These were a set of laws put into place to ensure the greater good. None of them are absolute. Not. A. Single. One. All are curbed by reasonable restriction.

As much as the gun lobby would like us to believe that placing a ban on assault weapons would somehow infringe on our intrinsic rights, the Constitution was designed to grow with us. Remember the 13th Amendment? The 19th? If you don’t know what these Amendments granted they abolished slavery and gave women the right to vote, respectively.

The 2nd Amendment was not intended to provide for a personal right to own and discharge weapons to the detriment and destruction of other citizens. It is framed in the context of the preservation of a well-regulated militia.

Even so, the modern “right” to gun ownership has never been unregulated. We know this works. The National Firearms Act of 1934 provided taxes on the issuer of an automatic weapon or sawed off shotgun that was in most cases more expensive than the gun itself. In addition, the registration required of the firearms created a loophole situation where gangsters and thugs, terrorists if you will, were prosecuted on violations of the act when they couldn’t be prosecuted on any other charge.

And guess what, if we look at the numbers, mass shootings have increased 3x since the assault weapons ban expired in 2004. And the dangerous rhetoric of blaming an entire religion for mass shootings is as preposterous as it is unfounded since most of these shootings were perpetuated by middle class white males.

But guns don’t kill people, you say? People kill people. True. So why do we make it so easy for people to get military-style guns that are created by design to take out as many people as possible in as little time and with as little effort as it takes to pull a trigger for a few seconds.

As you go to work on Monday, any lunatic can have a fight with his girlfriend, go legally buy an AR-15 and all the ammo he can carry then go shoot up a mall, a playground, a church, or any other place we gather in large numbers. And in a matter of seconds, he can do more damage than we should be able to imagine. But sadly, we know exactly what it looks like. What it feels like. So, know this…when you go to work on Monday, you can do something about this, or you can continue to play politics and line your coffers with money from the gun lobby.

We mothers have had enough of burying children. We wives have had enough of burying husbands. We children have had enough of burying parents. We Americans have had enough of this epidemic.

Stand together, and make this stop.

Moving Day

I’ve had a lot of fun with this blog, but I’ve decided to move my musings over to my author website at www.AngelaShori.com. I’m in the process of migrating all of this content over to the blog there, so look for more updates to come.

The site will feature book reviews as well as information on my writing projects, publishing news, free stories, works in progress and more.

Thanks,

Angela Shori

and The Cabin: A Christmas Short Story

A little holiday gift

Reviewing some old writing projects, some of which, long forgotten, I came across a short story that I’d published in an anthology benefiting a children’s center in 2001. As I read through The Cabin, it touched me on many levels. There were clear plot points and details within that I modeled after my grandmother, Lillian Whitman – NaNan who passed away only a few months ago.

As I took a trip down memory lane with Tressa, I wanted to give this story a new chance to be heard. It’s now available on Amazon as an ebook.

If you are interested in reading the story, drop me a line at ashori@typewriterlabs.com. I’ll get you set up with a free review copy in exchange for an honest review on Amazon.

This is a departure from the children’s book genre and fits more with Contemporary Holiday Romance. It’s a quick read, and I hope you enjoy it.

I’m still hard at work on the children’s series as well as a novel for #NaNoWriMo, though truthfully, completing some of these other projects is getting in the way of the new novel. It may get new life as a short story soon as well.

I’ll also be posting some comps of the proposed cover of the first travel guide for parents with small children for feedback soon. If you’re interested in being a beta reader for that, please let me know.

Please join the email list to stay up to date on free book promotions, new launches, and other information. If you join, I’ll shoot you a quick email requesting your preferred genre, and you will either receive a previously unpublished children’s story or a free copy of The Cabin.

Great Halloween Reads for the kids

If your kids are anything like mine, they’ve been planning for Halloween for weeks – a whole year actually in the case of my oldest who saw a Wicked Witch decoration while trick-or-treating last year and became fascinated with L. Frank Baum’s tale of the Wizard of Oz. She’s going to be our little Dorothy.

As much fun as the dressing up and the candy are to them, they LOVE reading about Halloween. Since we’re coming up on that day, I thought it might be fun to share our list of Halloween favorites. In no particular order, the most-requested Halloween books in our house this year:

  1. A Boo-tiful Halloween by Angela Shori – Playfully referred to as the monster book in our house, it’s a crowd favorite. The oldest recites it on cue, and the youngest jumps up and down. They may be slightly biased by the fact that it was written for them by mom, but it’s been a huge success in our house. [Side note- the kindle version is free for one more day so please do grab a copy and let me know if your little one enjoyed it.]
  2. Llama Llama Trick or Treat by Anna Dewdney – What holiday is complete without our favorite little Llama and his friends. This is a sweet book (we have the board version) that my girls love to look at and “read” themselves.
  3. Curious George goes to a Costume Party by Margaret & H.A. Rey – When our favorite monkey goes to a costume party there are fun and scary surprises all around. Is that a ghost?!??!
  4. Sofia the First Halloween Ball – This is a very sweet story, and I love the message it sends my girls about being there for each other. I’m not always a huge fan of Princess Amber, but she does provide many little teaching moments and this story is no different.
  5. Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean – When Pete the Cat’s involved there’s always fun.

Counting down to Halloween

We’re marking off the days over here with increasing excitement, and I just found out that the kids are reverting to their pre-Oktoberfest plan to be characters from the Wizard of Oz instead of wearing their drindl’s again. Eek! Whatever they end up as, they’ll be super cute, and we’ll have a lot of fun.

I’ve seen some really great marketing recently that’s all themed up for Halloween. Such fun. I love this snicker’s ad featuring the headless horseman – or is the the horseless headsman?

And for a little shameless self-promotion, the monsters of A Boo-tiful Halloween are roaming free again on Amazon Kindle. If you haven’t grabbed your copy, take advantage of it before the 28th. If you love it, please leave a review.

A Boo-tiful Halloween by Angela Shori is the perfect book for night-time, tuck-em-in, reading aloud time. And, of course, it’s perfect for Halloween, which is right around the corner. I can remember reading colorfully illustrated books like this to my son when he was little and he still talks about them, and what fun we had. He would memorize them and finish each rhyme before I could even get it out of my mouth! This book is just like that — one that is perfect for banishing fears of monsters under the bed. In this book, all the monsters are cute and adorable..Five stars to the author for creating a memorable read.

Summary from Goodreads:

Gather all your ghouls and goblins for a colorful journey with the friendly monsters of A Boo-tiful Halloween.

This Book doesn’t have a lot of words but that’s not always a bad thing for littles. The illustration’s are usually what matter most with the toddler crowd.

The illustrations in this book were a big hit with Mr Mason. He loved the monsters. It’s a great little fun book for the kiddos.

Mason give this book 5 stars.
